I cannot think of a more wasteful and barbaric fishing practice. The shark finning industry is devastating millions of sharks each year. Through the common long-lining practice to acquire the fins, many sea birds, sea turtles, and countless other marine animals are being killed off at alarming rates. Stop shark finning!

This is a far sighted decision on the part of the Repubic of the Maldives. Protection of the shark will bring untold rewards for future generations. As a diver, underwater photographer and traveler this brings the Maldives to the top of my list of future travel destinations.

Get real!! If you allow sharking you will definitely loose the tourist/dive industry. I, for one, will never return. What is there for a diver other than amazing diving and seeing these wonderful creatures. Get real....don't blow the one industry you have...stop shark fishing/finning!!!

"Animals are now more than ever a test of our character, of mankind's capacity for empathy and for decent, honorable conduct and faithful stewardship. We are called to treat them with kindness, not because they have rights or power or some claim to equality, but in a sense because they don't; because they all stand unequal and powerless before us." Congratulations and well done on implementing this ban. On hearing the news I've booked a trip to visit the maldives this year. I have always wanted to visit the maldives however before this ban was implimented i was extreamly opposed to any country that allowed shark fishing even my homeland has not taken this monumental step yet however we are still pushing. Thankyou

It is great to see that the Maldives is supporting and protecting sharks. I am glad that this country has grasped the importance of caring for sharks in their waters. i hope that this example of conservation is followed by many other countries in the near future.

I have been in the Maldives twice. Seeing sharks is always the highlight of the trip. Unfort. on the second one I haven't seen even one. No more gatherings where you can swim in a soup of sharks. I am sure you are fully aware of the amount divers spend in the Maldives. It is not a cheap destination and for that divers can expect the best. I do hope the Maldives do the right thing and ensure that future generations still have the chance to swim with sharks.
