Once the sharks are gone, you will have an economic disaster on your hands. Your tourism will be diminish and the people that have made their living on the disgusting industry that you are embracing will be out of jobs. It doesn't take an economist to realize that this bill is ridiculous and counter productive.

It seems ridiculous based on the knowledge we have available today, that anyone with a basic understanding of the oceans, would even consider increasing the threat to sharks.

With no sharks in the ocean, your countries will perish! We need the sharks to balance the eco-system. The ocean will die without them and so will you!

Palau has always been a positive example for the world's conservationists. They have forbidden long line fishing from Japanese and other fishing fleets, stood against the ghastly practice of shark finning and other ecological practices. And in return, Palau has earned the respect of all peoples of the world and increased their tourism ten fold. Why would Palau even consider losing that respect, and losing their tourists to permit the egregious act of shark fishing. Shame on those who would push this bill forth, shame on those who probably are taking bribes and turning their cheeks to permit this ungodly bill to pass and become law.

If there is any money to be made from shark fishing, it will be very short term. On the other had, divers will pay indefinitely to see sharks, one of the great attractions. If you ignore the conservation, stewardship and extinction arguments, the mercenary should at least show the good sense of being more than a short-sighted money-grabbing exercise. Sadly, sharks offer no long-term profits from fishing. Only tourism can do that.
10. Dermot Keane, Malakal, Koror, Palau

Palau is already famous throughout the world for it’s progressive shark conservation program. It would be terrible for Palau to now become famous for allowing the destruction of its last shark populations. Please reject Senate Bill 8-44.
