I urge the government of Raja Ampat to protect oceanic resources which include full legal protection of sharks, manta rays, dolphins and coral reefs.

My husband and I are passionate divers. One of the last true diving paradises is Raja Ampat. Even divers who live on the other side of the globe, like I do, know this. We are saving up to come and dive with your magnificent megafauna. Please protect your unique jewel of wilderness!

As a world traveler and scuba diver, I urge the government to take the necessary legislative changes to conserve their oceanic resources which includes the full legal protection of sharks, manta rays, dolphins and coral reefs. Eco-tourism is a key component in creating revenue and a tourism economy to travel destinations all over the world. It is imperative to take immediate action before additional damage and the destruction of your delicate eco-balance. Educate the local natives to understand the financial impact of conserving for a long term continuous tourism economy versus a short term immediate small financial gain.

Please put protections in place to ensure that sharks, mantas in Raja Ampat. With the tragedies occurring in our ocean at large, you would be preserving one of the last pristeen areas of great biodiversity on the planet for future generations. Please do this for our grandchildren and all future generations.

I am bringing two groups of 16 divers this October to Indonesia traveling from Komodo to Raja Ampat, but my divers will not want to come back again if the undersea life has been destroyed. Please protect your incredible sealife by banning sharkfinning and the killing of rays. Please protect your waters for the benefit of today's tourist dollar and for the future of your own children and your children's children. We all look to you for leadership in protecting our world. Thank you for your attention.

It should be simple - when you destroy the top tier of a ecological chain, the entire ecosystem will collapse.

The Raja Ampat Government should lead the world with this example of protecting the environment with the creation of this sanctuary.
16. Alisa Schwartz, Jackson, New Jersey, United States
Raja Ampat is becoming known as a world class dive destination! Paradise diving! Encounters with mantas and sharks are the highlight of dive vacations! Sharks, mantas, and rays are critical to sustainable fisheries, healthy reefs and strong eco-tourism revenue. Please establish a sanctuary....prohibiting the fishing of all sharks, mantas and mobula rays

To save the ocean you have to protect sharks. Please do everything in your powers to protect the unique ocean environment of Raja Ampat. Fishing practices that destroy the reef and fish stock are an assault on your people

Since 2006, I have dove in Raja Ampat for a total of 6 weeks. When other divers ask me what I saw, I always say that there were no sharks. I have seen almost as many shark fishermen as I have seen sharks. That makes me not want to go back to Raja Ampat and I encourage others that want to see sharks to go somewhere else. Please protect the sharks and mantas so I can come back and bring my friends.

3. Mary OMalley, Delray Beach, Florida, United States
My husband and I take several international dive trips each year, and visited Raja Ampat earlier this year. Of the whole two week trip and about 50 dives, the two dives with Mantas stood out by far as the highlight of the trip. Diving with these magnificent, graceful animals is an experience we will treasure forever. The biggest disappointment of the trip, however, was the lack of sharks. We would like to come back to Raja Ampat again and again. But we would like to come back and see sharks the next time! We would gladly pay a fisherman to keep a shark or a manta alive rather than killing it. And there are many thousands more divers, like us, who would do the same. Sharks and mantas are much more valuable alive! Please protect them.

We love sharks, and we so very much want to see them in Raja Ampat, again. They are so critical to a healthy environment, and Raja Ampat oceans should be restored to the rightful state with sharks, mantas, and mobulas

Mr
While i totally agree that that this is wrong our energies would be better spent on tackling the human population explosion. More people inevitably mean more exploitation and destruction. No one seems to question our 'divine right' to go forth and multiply. That is the issue which needs tackling for all our sakes

It seems there is no hope for Indonesia but good luck. As long as the govrenment insists that commercial fishing can co-exist in recreational and important marine areas, this will continue.

We need to protect these beautiful creatures. How sad it would be if our children or grandchildren never get the chances we have to admire and dive with sharks.
