Petition to Westchester County: Signers and Comments

Last Updated April 03, 2009 1:00AM EST

3694 Bridget Mason, Springfield, New South Wales, Australia

Please pass this law as it will hopefully encourage similar laws to be passed in other states and countries. We need to stop the slaughter of these beautiful and important animals NOW!!

3693 Not publicly disclosed, New York, NY, USA

I grew up in Westchester and still have family there. I do not support the use of shark fin products at all.

3692 Scott Raymond Murchison, Ryde, New South Wales, Australia

I believe that this law should be passed as this could start the ball rolling for similar laws to be made, hopefully an international ban on shark fishing. If we take out such an integral part of the balance of the ocean we are going to ruin the earth for everything in it, including ourselves.

Take it from me, I am PETRIFIED of sharks....or used to be. I walked into class 2 days ago to see a huge screen saying "Sharkwater" on it and started freaking out cause I'm so scared of sharks. 2 days later I am completely changed of heart. I want to save sharks, LEAVE THEM ALONE! Seriously, we only have like 10% left, 5 years from now you're not gonna have any money from the fins anyway, quit hunting and leave the animals alone. It's not even cool, and your never going to get a girlfriend. Please, listen. Take it from me, I KNOW how scary and nasty you can think a shark is. 2 days ago, if I saw a picture of a shark, I'd pretty much start crying, until I watched Sharkwater in my marine biology class. But anyways, please, look deep into your heart for this one. You have to look at the big picture. We only have like 10% of sharks left in the oceans, and 5 years from now, your not going to be sitting on any sharks or shark fins because you've already killed them all. Then everyone is going to blame it on you, you'll be poor, and your grandchildren will never even get to be afraid of sharks. So quit being stubborn and stop doing this. Is this how you really want the shark extinction story to go down? Because some people in some place wanted their fins? Kind of embarrassing for you. So shut up and listen when I tell you, you have to stop. Nevertheless, your gonna be the one who's sitting on a big bag of hay for your bed because your going to be poor, cause guess what? NO MORE SHARKS TO SELL. Oh no! You're gonna go find another animal to kill off, and your going to go down in the history books as an extinctioner, because there's not going to be any animals left except for the ones at the zoo.

3612 Joan Masterson, Durbanville, Western Cape, South Africa

Over 70 million sharks are being killed all over the world for their fins (which have no nutritional value at all) to make fin soup. This is an atrocity that has to stop! Canada takes pride in killing over 250 000 baby seals in their annual seal hunt every year. They claim that the seals have become more and more every year and that culling them to preserve their existence is the humane thing to do....Does someone see the connection here? The seal growth was being organized by their natural enemy which is the shark. Due to less and less sharks being around to maintain the ecology, the seal population growth is getting out of hand. So are many other things because of man's greed and the only thing the Canadians can think of is killing the baby seals in an inhumane manner by clubbing them to death instead of trying to find a solution that will fix the problem in hand: stop the shark hunts so that the natural processes in the sea can go their course again. It is man's interference and greed in everything that is causing all the destruction in the world. It is time we acknowledge our part in this destruction and take the first step towards and mend nature by starting to protect our sharks.

Poudre a bander !!!

3572 Melissa Chatten, Trenton, ON, Canada

The shark fin industry is a butchery to our oceans. Thousands of sharks are captured, de-finned, and then thrown back into the ocean to die slowly, terribly, taking hours or days to final die. The soup which is made from their fins does not feed the hungry, nor cure any diseases. Its only use is as a status symbol to the rich. The fins add no flavour to the soup, nor any nutritional value. Sharks are living, breathing, feeling, animals who suffer greatly at the expense of giving some rich people more money and bragging rights. The import and export of shark fin products must be stopped every where around the world now. If we wait any longer it will be too late. When the various shark species dies, a part of our oceans will die with them, and we will be the poorer for it.

3571 Luke Preston, Sydney, NSW, Australia

3570 Not publicly disclosed, Barrie, ON, Canada

Can u please leave these innocent creatures alone?

3569 Lizzy Ellison, London, UK

There is no excuse for this cruel and barbaric act. It is ignorance and lack of education that allows the exploitation of sharks for their fins to continue. I feel ashamed to be part of this human race as we continue to display our success at destroying this planet

3568 Victoria Caroline Braun, Bowmanville, New Brunswick, Canada

I recently watched Sharkwater, it was horrible, it made me so angry. Whoever could do that just for money is real messed up, like seriously get a real job.

3567 Jon Buckner, Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire, England

It is ridiculous in this day and age to think that it is acceptable to kill an endangered species...and for a bowl of soup!!

3566 Lucy Houchen, Calgary, Alberta, Canada

3565 David Austin, Burleigh Heads, QLD, Australia

What a responsible and admirable example of our need to 'evolve from ignorance' this would be to the rest of the world. David.

I strongly encourage you to go ahead with banning shark products from your community - this is one thing we can all live without - and an opportunity for Westchester to shine as an environmental leader in this area for the world!

3555 Maxime Tremblay, Quebec, Quebec, Canada

3529 Kaitlin Anne Kostyra, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada

To change the ways of the world, we must first start with education. Age old traditions that endanger species need to be modified, and our governments need to be honest and true.

3528 Ian Brierley, Parksville, BC, Canada

We need to stop the killing of any sea life as it's our job to protect for the next generation and it's not our right just use and abuse everything until it's gone.

Although not from your country, the issue of over fishing sharks affects the world's marine ecosystems. I support this measure and would encourage other states and/or County's in the USA to do the same.

You do not know where these shark fins are coming from. They are most likely fished illegally, and you are supporting it. The concept of blood diamonds from Africa are the same of fishing for shark fin. In the end a life was sacrificed for someones enjoyment. It is wrong and no ones life, human or animal should be thought of as lesser.

This law could be a first step for other localities to pass a similar law. This cultural tradition has become a mark of luxury for people who can afford it. People are just interested by the money. Nowadays too many people are interested by shark fin soup and the population of sharks are declining very rapidly. We must do something to stop that.

No more shark products!! We are ruining the earth by ruining our shark species, I urge you to watch a shark be teared apart while still alive and then thrown back into the ocean without its fins. The shark suffocates to death underwater and dies in vain.

3404 Amy Fedrigo, Toronto, ON, Canada

3403 Jordan Dell, Kahnawake, Quebec, Canada

Just recently I saw the movie Sharkwater and it made me feel really bad, seeing all those sharks dying, I think its sad. People are only doing it for the money. Its just like someone cutting some random persons arms and legs off and throwing them into the water for them to drown. Some people say that shark fin soup will help to prevent cancers, but its not true, I think it is an excuse to kill them for money. Sure there have been some shark attacks but it doesn't mean they should be wiped out. It's very wrong and this horrible thing needs to stop.

Again.. as I just mentioned in a petition on the killing of Sharks in the movie Sharkwater.. This is inhumane.. and should be stopped.. I think the main goal is that the Asian countries stop wanting the shark fins for any reason.. IF we can stop the demand, the supply will dry up.. but as long as there is a demand, humans in the search for the almighty dollar will deplete the ocean of sharks till there are none left.. This world is so full of greed.

Too little time has been taken to truly understand these beautiful, intelligent creatures. They could teach us alot about survival, understanding the natural order of things. We are supposed to be the intelligent ones or at least that's what most of us want to believe. It behooves me that we have become judge & jury of the world without thought or remorse to what may happen to this world in the future. Stop the killings, stop the finning, stop the long lining. It is the obligation of those with government power to look after ALL that reside in the constituencies. It is the people that voted you into office that you are obligated to. This world & its inhabitants need strong, dedicated politicians who aren't afraid to do the right thing, aren't afraid to stop the killing. This practice is truly disgusting and cruel. Many sharks are left to slowly suffocate which is just unnecessary. How can you condone the dismembering of declining shark populations in the name of cuisine? If this continues, some shark species will become extinct and this will have a bigger impact on the ecosystem than can even be fathomed. Please, ban the practice.

Dear Sir, We only have a short time to spend upon this planet while sharks have always been a very important part of the ecosystem ever since, so we cannot change the rules of mother nature and run the risk of accelerating the decline of life, and as a representative of the people, carrying their word, I feel you have no other choice but react positively to this demand: STOP SHARK FIN TRADE by making it illegal. Thank you for the next generation. This is not a question of nationality, sir. Morality and intelligence have no color, no religion, no flag. Everybody can be part of the solution for we are all sharing this world, not always in an equitable way, but you and I have more in common than some may think we have. Dear Sirs, please protect these beautiful and amazing creatures and help stop the destruction of our remarkable seas that are home to such a fantastic array of living creatures and organisms. Sharks play a vital role in our ecosystems and enhance the environments in which they live. Our world and seas would be a much poorer world without them. They need protecting and that needs to happen immediately. We owe it to sharks and also to our children and future generations to conserve and to protect both sharks and our rich seas, so that they too can appreciate and treasure this beautiful underwater world. Please make a difference by helping to save our environment and not furthering its destruction. Make a stance and do something amazing today, in an act that your children will be eternally grateful to you for.

I want to see the sharks alive! Not in zoos, museums or magazines and photos, but in the wild. Why are we killing them? Ask yourself that. The only answers you'll get are from humans' greed. We kill them out of fear and for food. But haven't we got enough food already? Humans are getting greedier and wildlife is paying for it. I may be young, but I know what's wrong and what's right, and hunting sharks is like murder, except no one gets arrested. Let the future generations admire us and think of what GOOD we did, instead of them thinking of us as ruthless, heartless, consumers. Sharks are extremely important to humans because they are a big help in providing phytoplankton (aka: what produces most of the oxygen we breathe). Most fish that are meals to the sharks consume phytoplankton. With the little amount of sharks we have left, there are way more fish able to consume what produces the very oxygen that we are breathing. This is one of the many reasons I fully support the banning of selling shark fins, and shark finning in general.

2558 Michael Pelosi, Toronto, Ontario, Canada

The time for action is now. Let the great country of USA lead by example and BAN all shark fin products in Westchester, NY. Unlike other animals, sharks can't be farmed. When they're gone, they're gone for good. This is the year 2008, I think we're smart enough to know this is wrong and cannot continue sustainability. What we do today will echo in eternity, let us save sharks today to ensure a greater tomorrow.

This is an inhumane practice that will inevitably affect the ecosystem of our oceans. Fins are sawed off while the shark is alive and then dropped back in the ocean to sink and die. These fins are not even used for flavor, but rather texture. This is UNACCEPTABLE.

I can't believe that shark fin products are available anywhere in the U.S. Many affluent and well educated Asians live in the U.S. & Canada and I am very distressed that there is a market for such an immoral product. Knowledge is power, a cliche yes, but this does not make it less true. We have shown ourselves capable of compassion and understanding once we have educated on the true nature of a species and its role in the world we share. So it has been displayed with efforts to save the dolphins, whales and seals to name some of the more popular causes of our oceans. Sharks are important to maintain the delicate balance of the oceans ecosystems and deserve the same protection as all animals that have been threatened by man's irresponsibility.

If you want a planet in 50 years, you might want to think about helping out the sharks. Sorry if they're not cute and cuddly but the fact is the oceans rely on sharks. They keep the balance in this place that all life on earth relies on. (Remember that thing called the web of life you learned about in third grade? Yeah it's not bull****) Yeah life on earth...that means us. If you want your children to be able to breath (we get 70% of our oxygen from the ocean), stop supporting the decimation of our oceans. If sharks go, we won't be far behind.

I am extremely concerned about the slaughter of 100 million sharks a year. I was shocked after watching 'Sharkwater'. I am convinced that saving the shark is a cornerstone of saving the planet, since they are at the top of the food chain, their destruction will lead to huge depletions in plankton, which is our planets main way to oxygenate the air and remove carbon dioxide. The wasteful trade in shark fin soup upsets me greatly and I would be extremely impressed if this soup was banned, it could encourage other countries to do the same.

2144 Tim Nicol, Perth, WA, Australia

The shark fin industry leads to decimation of shark populations and this damages the marine environment, potentially leading to ecological collapse. Also, the cruel practice of finning and releasing live sharks must be stopped. The best way is to ban shark products and shark fin products.

Its such a cruel thing to do to one of the worlds oldest fish. I mean do you really have to eat fins. Like seriously, you can't eat tilapia or flounder. Shark fin is a very interesting food choice. Because it is commonly used in soup only for texture there really is no need for it. You can use something else like noodles or jello. This would save many millions of sharks in this world. It makes no sense to be using it at all.

By tampering with the oceans delicately balanced food chains by endangering sharks we are putting the whole planet at risk. Sharks play a vital role in the natural order of the ocean that provides the great majority of the oxygen we breathe. Sharks place in the food chain is directly related to the planets oxygen supply. It is imperative that measures for sharks protection are taken now as they mature very slowly. We need to implement all the steps necessary to protect the future of these magnificent creatures, and of our oceans, because our existence relies on it.

I support a ban on shark fins for the following reasons: Shark-finning is horribly cruel. The demand for shark fins has led to near-extinction for many types of sharks. Sharks are crucial to the balance of nature in the oceans. The whole ecosystem would collapse without them. Shark meat contains toxic levels of mercury.

Please stop shark fin products. It is cruel and our own survival is at stake.

1461 Jessica Nicole Williams, Pickering, Canada

I support the ban of shark fin products because; well look at it this way, someone once said to me, why do they cut of shark fins and put them in soup? They wouldn't cut off someone’s ear and put it in soup that's just cruel so why are they doing it to the sharks? It makes no sense, so like they should stop and even though I don’t particularly like sharks myself doesn’t mean i wont stick up for them because they don’t have a mouth to stick up for themselves. So yeah this should really stop like NOWWW!!!

Please help end this barbaric practice of shark finning. It is helping to proliferate a myth in China, which causes great suffering to sharks. They are majestic animals, and we need them to survive. 70% of our oxygen supply comes from the ocean. If sharks become extinct, the ocean balance will shift drastically, and our oxygen supply will be compromised. We must support and honor the creatures on this Earth, not use them purely for our benefit. Who are humans to continue raping this Earth without conscience? We consume without need, and cause so much pain in doing so. We must become more conscious. Peter Benchley, who wrote JAWS said "The shark in an updated Jaws could not be the villain; it would have to be written as the victim, for, world-wide, sharks are much more the oppressed than the oppressors." Please help. Thank you, Antonia Salm

Westchester or anywhere else in the world. If we were talking about Westminster or Winchester I would feel the same way: shark fins as a component of the human diet are an unnecessary and decadent luxury that endangers one of the ocean's most precious inhabitants. The world at large (I'm willing to bet) is sickened at reports of sharks having their fins cut off and then thrown back into the water to die miserably. I don't currently live in Westchester but I once did and I currently work in White Plains. I would hope that we as intelligent human beings could understand the significance of killing the top predator in an eco-system. Once gone, it is forever. Let\'s be smart about the sharks and not see them go extinct out of neurotic fear- I hear more people die of toaster accidents in a year than shark attacks. You don't see people stop using their toasters. The threat of sharks is something we humans can create vividly, but its inflated. The sale of these products supports corruption on the level of drug dealing, the fishing boats that bring in these " fins" ( because that is all they take of these creatures ) into the US, don’t care what they kill in their nets to get it, what little we know about sharks supports that they are needed for the very survival of our oceans. We all learn of the food chain as kids in school, these are your apex predators, what is at the bottom of that chain will effect the very air we need to survive ourselves. Fishing for sharks for one single product, their fins, is not only morally wrong, it is fiscally absurd. The US will gain only the shortest term financial benefits with most profits going abroad. Secondly, the shark population is not a quickly renewable resource. Please consider the ecological ramifications of shark finning.

At last someone is speaking sense. Shark fin products should be banned worldwide and if this can be the beginning of the end to the horror that is shark finning, please show the world we can make a difference.

1039 Kim-Nora Ann Moses, New York, NY, USA

Dear Madames and Sirs, This will be a good move, considering that over exploitation of sharks for food and medicines/supplements are negatively impacting an animal that reproduces very slowly. Obviously, shark populations cannot sustain the ravages of human greed. Please ban the sale of all products containing shark derivatives.

1038 Gwendolyn Chambers, Peekskill, NY,
1037 Samuel Roberts, Salford, Greater Manchester, England
1036 Lisa M. Fields, Paw Paw, IL, USA

Human Beings are so self-centered. We kill whatever we want for any reason we deem necessary, even for the hell-of-it. It's pathetic. I also feel that we in the USA are so ridiculously in love with political correctness that we allow people from other cultures to do whatever they like in our country even if their habits/principles/morals are contrary to our own. The vast majority of Americans do NOT eat shark and I'm sick of our own culture/principles/morals being watered down to suit others.

Please, please introduce a ban on shark fin products and shark fin soup before it is too late. Ninety percent of sharks have been decimated. Please help save this species. It is a cruel and barbaric treatment of sharks. They have been around millions of years, I can't believe how totally uncivilized mankind has sunk to.

Please stop shark fin products in Westchester, NY now. The killing of sharks to obtain the fin products is a cruel way of killing a endangered animal. They cut the fin off and toss the shark, still alive, back into the water to die as it is unable to swim or survive. Sharks are a beautiful, misunderstood, and vital part of the underwater world and are in need of protection. Please take action now before it is to late to help these sharks, and ban shark fin products. Thank you.

At last someone with some sense, BAN all shark products, sharks ALIVE are far more better off to enhance the diversity of the seas & for the future & well being of this planet. The legislators of this bill should be recognized & be proud that they have got up off there backsides & done something to start bringing the pointless slaughter of these magnificent creatures back from near future extinction. If not just to say to people we wont sell your shark products, perhaps other descent human beings will follow suit & that industry suffers enough to save any amount of sharks 1 or hundreds of thousands. SAVE THE SHARK
