We all need to open our eyes - short-term, local economic gain will only lead us to a global environmental catastrophe when we don't look at the long-term, irreversible impact of decimating an entire category of apex predators. Humans are intrinsically connected to ALL life forms - in our short-sightedness we will irreversibly harm ourselves. Please be a global leader to whom all governments look to and ban all fishing of sharks and their relatives in your waters.

I am just coming back from Indonesia. I have been really surprised by the TOTAL absence of sharks in the WAKATOBI National Park where i have stayed for 1 month and did around 70 dives.
This place is suppposed to be one of the most preserved ecosystem in Indonesia and is the second largest marine park of Indonesia, and still, all the sharks have already been caught and sold for the food market. One shark seen in 70 dives... is that normal ???
And is it normal to find shops selling massive shark fins in the international airport of Jakarta ?
Thank you for helping sharks !

The sharks, at the rate of 70 million fished out of our oceans each year, could never hope to sustain or replace their numbers at such an alarming rate!!

We have to start at our doorstep first (not buy it, not consume it) and then force governments to support and bring new sorces to those who do it (deforestation, overfishing, poaching,..) otherwise they won't stop no-matter what you present or educate them. I was in India, Africa, South America, Indonesia...and I tell you... Hunger and greedyness are powerfull!!
.., but lets keep fighting together!!

Please let there be sustainable fishing laws in Indonesia and ban shark finning as this is wasteful and cruel.
Let you future generations enjoy future fish stocks and you very important tourist industry be able to be enjoy you beautiful reefs and tropical fish, sharks and other ocean creatures.
Once these are gone.. there will be limited tourist dollars, and no marine life.

Indonesia is one of the last frontiers of marine biodiversity. I have the privelege of enjoying it there earlier this year. Raja Ampat and other areas in Indonesia (like Komodo, Bunaken, Ambon) must be protected at all costs. Sharks, Mantas, and other large animals are VITAL to protecting this amazing ocean environment. Please do all you can to help save them.

I am not only a diver, but have also just graduated as an ecologist/conservation biologist and have seen first hand the damage that can be done to an ecosystem by overfishing. Please think of the environment when making any decisions about the future of your coastlines; or at the very least think about the economy of the country. Large pelagic species such as sharks and rays are VERY popular tourist draws throughout the world and worth more to both your country and the planet alive!

I do not understand why some people will not be told that the shark population is becoming smaller by the day. If the present killing of sharks continues at this rate our children will never see a live one, only pictures. I think this would be a great mistake to deprive our children of this pleasure.
