Shark Savers congratulates California Senate for banning the shark fin trade

Shark Savers is pleased to announce that the world’s embattled shark populations got a reprieve today as the California state Senate passed a historic bill to protect all shark species from the environmentally destructive shark fin trade. The bill passed the Senate by a vote of 25 to 9. It now moves to Governor Jerry Brown to be signed.

The passing of AB 376 was an especially important vote as California represents the largest economy in the world to thus far take a strong stand against the shark fin trade. California joins with Hawaii, Washington and Oregon—states that already have shark fin bans in place—effectively closing down all remaining ports and markets of the United States west coast from contributing to the shark fin trade.

This week a shadow is hovering over the usually peaceful little town of Puerto Baquerizo Moreno on  San Cristobal island in the Galapagos archipelago. A fishing boat from Manta (a port on the central coast of Ecuador) has been anchored in the port for a few days and is bearing a sad cargo. The mutilated carcasses of 379 illegally caught sharks are onboard the vessel, which the National Park Galapagos and the Ecuadorian Navy confiscated on July 19th.

As the world’s shark populations are forced towards the brink of extinction due to global demand for shark fin soup and other shark products, Shark Savers and Lush Fresh Handmade Cosmetics joined together to bring the message of sharks to the people of Hong Kong.

The first two weeks of June saw an intense pace of shark conservation activities by Shark Savers in concert with Lush. Each of Lush’s 12 stores in Hong Kong and Macau pushed Shark Savers’ pro-shark message by asking customers to sign postcards to the government of Hong Kong, urging them to ban shark fin soup and products in the municipality.
