Thank you shark savers for taking the time and effort to save these magnificent creatures. What you do is truly inspiring and creates much awareness for the devastating consequences of taking away our ocean's apex predator. Keep going strong, you have much support in California!

Support Palau with tourism
After reading what Palau has done for sharks and rays, I changed my travel plans and am now going to Palau. All divers and anyone wishing to support this endeavour should do so, by visiting the country. As tourism is Palau’s biggest money earner, we have to show them that the sanctuary is economically viable.

Sharks are NOT monsters....but many people still think so - publicly
I found this article about facing your biggest fears. At first I was impressed, then I got to this section in the interview:

Quote: "Anything you tried that you wouldn't do again?"
"I might not shark cage dive again! I tried to have experiences I could grow from, so I didn't eat spiders or do 'Fear Factor-y' things. When I went shark diving, I realized, wait a second, we're supposed to be afraid of sharks. They are monsters. There is no upside to not being afraid of sharks!"
This is exactly the kind of attitude that gets sharks killed. Instead of recognizing the beauty and majesty of these amazing animals, and respecting them instead of fearing them, she considers this experience "appropriately scary because sharks are monsters". I would have accepted her feeling scared, but not the monster comment. She obviously was not really ready to expand her horizons, even though she claims she was.
The author is planning to move to the Caribbean. God forbid she sees another shark....

BBC shark report
Having just seen a report on the attacks in the Red Sea on the BBC I am very disappointed in what is supposed to be one of the best news services on the plant in their reporting style.
While the article (a video based online one) does use phrases such as uncommon the overall wording and presentation of the report is not in any way favorable to image of Sharks as aggressive predators.
I write this, along with many letters, to urge people to speak out against negative reporting to the public in shark related incidences and the presence of sharks in the media only in a negative train of thought. Make a stand against whatever media in your region makes these 'SHARK ATTACK' stories as these are as negative to saving elasmobranchs as anything else.

lets keep trying to educate

UNLIKELY OR LIKELY
I was shock that sharks are in danger.... but there is no use talking about it as that 75 milion sharks won't come back no matter what we say.so let's do something to protect this creatures before its too late. Isuggest we set a quota for shark fishing as this will set a boundary and indirectly increase the number of sharks.Besides,if we stop eating shark fin soupp then this whole problem wil be gone forever and for good....I hope you would read my comment and try to realize my idea as this will bring a huge diiference to us and sharks around the world.

Sharks
I think sharks are a beautiful thing. At this moment I'm watching Shark Week. I'm only 13 but I know for a fact my future career is going to involve sharks. I am very dissaponted on how sharks are taken care of these days. It's a dissapontment. Even made me cry. At school my nick-name is Shark. It's because I have already done so much to try to save these animals. But just my little help is not going to save all of them. So I'm asking for everyones help! No one needs to be afraid of these beautiful creatures. They may kill, but I have studied enough to know the truth. Please help, and don't hate these extincting animals. We need them, once they go so many mom beautiful animals will. Anyone reading this I truly hope you feel the same way. asians are discusting anyways look at their air, they are supposed to be advanced. well they are to the point of killing them selves off because of polution so they feel shark fin will help them well its killing them no surprise.
anyways i feel very strongly about the earth and all its beauty and it makes me sick of how humanity takes advantage of mother

shark fins in china town
so i was walking around china town in nyc. and i walked into a tea shop filled with jars of tea. turned around and saw two big jars of shark fins behind the counter. i walked right out in complete horror. i already know its a terrible corrupt industry but for it to be so out in the open even though its illegal. i walked by another store that also had a bunch of jars of them. mustve been almost a hundred fins. so now im wondering if there is anyplace that i can report this cause i tried looking but i dunno who would handle it. if chinatown can get raided for bootleg handbags they should get raided for this.

I'm wondering if anyone knows who I might send a letter to regarding the recent episode of "Survivor: Fans vs. Favorites" in which the "survivors" killed and ate a reef shark. They were shown devouring shark meat and exclaiming how tasty it was. I can't imagine what kind of damage this has done to the Shark Savers cause as millions of people watched this episode. I think it was terribly irresponsible for CBS to allow this activity on the show at all, but even worse to allow it to air.

Thoughts?

The film, Sharkwater, has had a profound impact on me. Before watching the film, I had no particular interests in sharks, positive or negative. I think Sharkwater is probably one of the most beautiful films that I have seen, except for the senseless killings of these magnificent creatures. The scene where a giant shark, generally thought to be predatory and merciless towards people, allows Mr. Rob Stewart to hold and hug her on the ocean floor fascinates and amazes me. In extreme contrast, the image of us humans slashing their fins and throwing their bodies back into the ocean where they sink, alive and helpless, to the bottom of the sea to die is also forever ingrained in my mind. I feel absolutely abhorred and sick to my stomach.

As a Chinese myself (although I have called Canada home for over 20 years), I know too well that Asians do consume a lot of shark fin soup and many of us are ignorant of these inhumane killings. Eating it would be no different from eating any kind of seafood or even meat for that matter. We would not know to think twice about it. Even though I rarely consumed the soup myself, I cannot help but feel my share of guilt and shame. I have made a personal commitment never to eat shark fin soup again. This film needs to be shown in Asia, particularly in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Japan to educate people in order to curb their demand for shark fins. This film was truly an eye-opener for me and I hope it will have the same effect on many more people, especially those who contribute directly or indirectly to these killings.

Ever since watching Sharkwater, I had wanted to make a small contribution on my part to help save the sharks. I had researched on different organizations and although there were many reputable ones that I had come across, I needed an organization, preferably close to home in North America, which shares the same goal as mine to stop finning and illegal slaughtering of sharks. Your organization seems to fit the bill. Therefore, I am sending you a small token of my support to help with our common cause. I am also attaching a little poem that I had written to share my sentiments.

Saving sharks will no doubt be a long and hard struggle. I wish your new organization success in your worthy endeavors.

Sharks (a poem)
“Once you have cut down the last tree, poisoned the last river and killed the last fish you will realize that you cannot eat your money.”
Old American Indian saying

Surviving 400 million years long
A magnificent creature, mighty and strong
Monstrous mammoth with a bite
A wrong we now must right

Gracing a boundless ocean intense
Possessing the proverbial sixth sense
Policing the waters for our sake
Her existence for granted we take

Seeds of life for us she sows
Playing the part of friend, not foe
But how dare we ungrateful souls repay
In a most horrendous, unspeakable way

Becoming predators we resolve to kill
For greed her blood we spill
Rendered paralyzed without breath
She suffers a slow and horrible death

Profiting on ignorant and boastful deeds
Senseless killings from voracious greed
Soon to befall a domino effect
Our very survival we will ultimately affect

Great website to an even greater cause.

About your petition urging Alibaba.com to stop selling shark products, I personally believe it will have limited effect. The root cause is there's huge demand for shark fins because Asians (especially Chinese) had been placing (insensible) value on the stuff for thousands of years. (shark fins used to be served to ancient emperors only)

The bigger problem is that the Chinese general public DOES NOT know about the shark finning and WHY it's harmful to the marine system. I believe, it's much more worthwhile to raise public awareness (in Asia) about the cause, rather than specially targeting an organization, because legally, Alibaba didn't do anything "wrong".

It's like, as long as there's drug addicts, there'll be people selling smack. We need to prove & educate Asians about shark finning.

I know being a Chinese, it's very difficult to change a culture of 1.3 billion strong. But I'm sure with relentless education and awareness targeting the youth, there is hope. If people don't know why killing sharks is bad, they won't change regardless of how many protests & boycotts there are. There's strong support to anti-shark finning practice in Western countries because Westerners don't eat the stuff! More must be done here, in Asia.

Thanks
