I’m just here to raise my voice and show you that there is a global concern with sharkfishing. I'm afraid that the rather poor shark protection around world will lead to major ecological disturbances damaging even humans.

Please don't allow a shark fishing industry at a time when shark populations are facing global declines, and our planet needs all the help it can get to reverse the impact of climate change.

5818 Alejandro Dans, Concordia, Argentina

Australia should join the current countries that banned shark fishing (specially finning) for the reasons stated above. Although I’m not Australian, sharks live round the globe, it affects us al. If you mess with the ocean ecosystem, you mess with the world's stability.

5817 Elisiane Lorenzato, Cascavel, Parana, Brazil its a shame.
5816 Jorge Sonnenschein, Caracas, Miranda, Venezuela

Es increible que el gobierno de COSTA RICA y otros paises que dependen del ecoturismo permitan la actuacion de MAFIAS ORIENTALES que asesinan tiburones

What will happen to us if we continue to accept inhumane practices as part of everyday life? Anything that has a nervous system (to say the very least) obviously has the ability to feel pain. "Do unto others as you would have done unto you". I damn sure would not want anyone to viciously cut off any part of my body WHATSOEVER; thus, I will not go around dismembering anything around me. I guess that there is no room for ethics in a house full of greed. Please be kind.

The barrier reef should be a sanctuary for all marine life. Stop this now before it ‘s destroyed forever along with the hope it symbolizes.

5789 Denis Lavalle, St Pierre Baptiste, Quebec, Canada
5788 Brenda Robosa, Vancouver, BC, Canada

Save the sharks. STOP SHARK FISHING: The shark fishing industry should be stopped at the source, by stopping the Chinese people from consuming shark fins. They are the biggest consumers of shark fins. Without consumers, then there would not be any business, without these businesses, there would not be any shark fishing.

5787 Not publicly disclosed, Vancouver, BC, Canada

Stop all shark fishing now! In the end, it ‘s our life that depends on this! Thanks!

5782 Ariadne Valverde, Sao Paulo, SP, Brazil
5781 Emily Starbuck, Sheffield, South Yorkshire, UK

I couldn’t believe my eyes when I came across this. How can Australia do something as monstrous as this?! We are already ruining ecosystems on the planet and allowing shark fishing is just another of the ways we are destroying the planet. STOP AND THINK!!! Don't turn into monsters! Just because the sharks aren't seen to be as intelligent as we are and can ‘t express their feelings doesn't give us the right to slaughter their populations. Would you act differently if the sharks could talk to us?!?! PROTECT THE REEFS...without the sharks the reefs may suffer more than they do already!

5780 Jesy Beckman, Crystal Beach, ON, Canada

I want to hurt those people that hurt sharks the way they hurt them. Cut their ears off and make soup out of them.

5779 Biron Dany, istres, Bouches du Rhones, France

tout ces massacres pour de l ‘argent ! sauvons les requins et tout l ‘cosystme ! sauvons la plante !

5778 Simon Colley, Bournemouth, Dorset, UK

Please address this burning issue there is no need to savage our oceans. Preservation and education is the key at this point in time! Is there really any need for us too massacre these wardens of the sea?

5777 Not publicly disclosed, Sao Paulo, SP, Brazil
5776 Christine Barnes, Maplewood, MN, USA

I strongly feel that it is cruel and inhumane to do what people are doing to the sharks. They play a vital role in the ecosystem and here we are, allowing fishermen to capture them and slice off their fins to add texture to some soup and then toss them back into the open sea to sink to the bottom and suffocate. I do not understand what is wrong with these people who feel that it is alright to do so, but how would they feel if we cut off their limbs and tossed them overboard? It is cruel and needs to stop now!!!

5775 Mariya Gluzman, Brookyn, NY, USA

I hope to someday bring my kids to Australia and show your beautiful country to them, including all your land and ocean creatures. It would be heartbreaking to not be able to show them your glorious sharks as well! Please, help future generations enjoy what we do!

As long as a country supports shark fishing, I will enthusiastically support boycotting traveling to those countries, as well as advocate that friends also boycott those countries. Maybe the lack of tourism dollars will promote change.

5753 Rob Valllieres, St Lazare, Quebec, Canada

I was so moved after watching the brilliant work of Rob Stewart in his documentary SHARK WATER. I will and plan to do as much as I possibly can to save our Sharks and our planet. I am not a marine biologist or Oceanographer but I am one person who has been awakened by what I saw and learned. I was totally beside myself when I saw how much was happening behind closed doors in Costa Rica and the Galapagos. Our species thrive on FEAR. Please contact me at anytime if I could be of any help, in anyway. Thank you for opening my eyes!Rob.V

5752 Brent Neil, Pointe Claire, Quebec, Canada

Green party candidate for Laval Les Iles (24033) Canadian federal election 2008. We have to do everything to preserve life on this planet the suffering of even one species is too much. The loss of this predator will be the demise of the ocean as other species grow our of control and use up all the resources in the ocean making it impossible for us to survive. We must protect them now!

I just saw a wonderful, beautiful movie on the playful behaviour of the Great White Shark. I do not believe in the decimation of any life form and would like Cdn law to be at the forefront in pursuing laws against shark hunting. It ‘s disgusting.

5748 Jan Curlee, Riverside, CA, USA

Stop killing the sharks, They are so beautiful The ocean needs them so do we..

5747 Steven Newstead, Bishops Stortford, Hertfordshire, UK

Shocked over Australia’s decision on shark fishing...expected more from the government who see themselves as a nation of environmentalists. wankers!

Please take action now to save sharks. If we don ‘t the future generations will wonder how we could look at all the information and still do the wrong thing. If we lose the top predators of the sea then the ecosystem will decay. The ocean is 80% of the earth. It is not a buffet for grabbing!

I am absolutely at a loss to why us Queenslanders don ‘t know about what is happening to our wildlife in our waters!! I thought we had more credit and integrity than this.

5733 Seana Campbell, Victoria, BC, Canada

I find it sad and despicable what we as humans are doing to our world. With the knowledge and communication available to us in this day in age, I don ‘t understand how our governments are not fighting and setting laws to save our endangered animals/sea life. Please do something to protect our sharks.

5732 Mariana Rodriguez Vagaria, Parana, Entre Rios, Argentina

I was completely stunned! I‘ve been fascinated by sharks my entire life and just finished watching "Sharkwater" and I felt so disturbed!!!!. I Had no idea sharks were in such danger!!!! WE humans look like monsters cutting sharks still alive and sending them in this conditions to the water. But after cruelty comes world wide problems. For next generations we can still make a difference. If we do not stop this we will have oxigen problems!

5731 Samuel Skidmore, Sydney, NSW, Australia

As a student at the University of Sydney studying Resource Economics This idea is not only economically flawed but a backwards step in Australia’s environmental future. Imagine public outrage if we were to set up a whaling zone in our waters.

Their is only ONE Great Barrier Reef and if the fishing is allowed to continue it will disrupt the natural cycles of the reef and offset the balance of nature possibly having disastrous repercussions. The slaughter of millions of sharks is a global issue which threatens all of our lives. Promoting a healthy oceanic ecosystem is in all of our best interests. We cannot afford to lose the sharks.

5630 Shannon Perger, Kelowna, BC, Canada

I think that shark finning should be banned. I am only 13 years old, and already I am participating in banning shark finning whenever and wherever I can. This is very important to me. When I watched the Sharkwater movie, right away I said to my classmates, as well as my teacher... I want to help. I want to be a leader. I WILL make a difference. When I was little I always though sharks were fascinating, and now, I finally get to help them, and hopefully, and someday... get to be a shark saver, that is as bold and brave as the people on Sharkwater proved to be. Thank you for reading this message. -Shannon Perger

I am disgusted that such an allowance as legal shark fishing has been introduced to the GBR, an area already under threat from global warming, fishing and tourism. Such an ecosystem should be saved, and the removal of one of it’s top predators is definitely not the action that should be taken. Surely everything in your power should be done to protect the coral reefs, oceans and its inhabitants.

Hello i think that paramount to protect the sharks. They is absolutely necessary to stop the carnage which occurs in Costa Rica .in the same way I think as of the countries like Canada and the United States prohibits the medicinal sale of derived from the drugs deriving wings of sharks and another animals that kinds. It is really important to make what because I believes that the planet are really during a time of decline its which surment will carry out has imminent instinction of a thousand living beings and which know human being. In this economic crisis period or everyone but emphase their economies, I believe that we must rather make a major turn world on the safeguard of our planet and this are with the government to be acted.

Killing animals which increase tourism in the Great Barrier Reef area so ruining livelihoods for years to come is only one reason why the shark industry must move away from the short term finacial gain of simply wasting top level predators. What will the next step be? - if the Australian government can deem it right to start or protect shark fisheries it is only a matter of time before it condones finning.

As the current economic downturn extends it ‘s reach through 2009 and many in the World are unwilling to acknowledge the root cause as unchecked greed, the pressure to continue exploiting natural resources for economic gain will continue. It requires bold leadership to step up and prevent such exploitation from wreaking havoc in our already impaired eco systems. I am humbly asking those who have the power to help preserve such a unique Global wonder as the Great barrier Reef, to do all in their power to help protect the entire Great Barrier Reef eco-system for future generations. Since I was in the third grade I have been interested with sharks. Every year until I graduated elementary school my science projects were about the many species of sharks. I have a love for those amazing creatures. I am disgusted that we still live in a world where we kill other species inhumanely just for profit. The governments of the world should wake up and enforce the protection of sharks, and the people of the world should refuse to use or eat shark products. We need to get off of our high horse and except we do not have the right to decide which species live and which species die. Shark fishing is as bad if not worse, due to the serious decline of sharks in our oceans!!

I'm speechless, I can't believe Australians are about to destroy, not only their most important pride after kangaroos and koalas, but also the worlds biggest natural treasure, again fast money and bad politics are treading on Earth's future. I lived in Sydney for a year and I learnt a lot about their culture and ecology consciousness, are they stepping back?? As a Colombian I grew up in a Catholic society, I'm no longer Catholic since 18 years ago, but I believe Heaven and Hell are nowhere else than here on Earth, our planet was created as a paradise or Heaven and we are turning it into a living hell or inferno. We owe this to ourselves, our children, grandchildren & the natural order of this world to make this stop. Money has become more important & it is time to take a stand. The brutality of these killings is beyond my comprehension. Are we as a race so "stupid" to believe that we can do anything we want & there will be no repercussions for our actions? To whom it may concern, I dive with sharks nearly every day, as I am a dive instructor. Mostly we see gray reef sharks, blacktip reef sharks, the occasional bull shark and once or twice a year we even get to swim with the majestic whale shark. In the 7 years I've spent on our Island, diving with sharks nearly every day, I never felt threatened by any of them, not once! Neither have I seen or heard of ANY accident involving sharks in our area. They are the most amazing and stunning creatures on earth (along with manta rays). But sad fact is I see less and less of them from year to year. We HAVE to save them! Shark finning or fishing cannot be supported by any government in their right mind, as these creatures are one of the most endangered species on our planet! From a second or third world country I would deem understanding of this issue not as a given, but Australia?!? I am shocked to hear an open minded, economically smart country as yours is not actively protecting endangered species AND potentially destroying one of their most important resources: Tourism! Believe me, in the long run, the money earned with shark fishing will be deducted ten fold on your income from tourism as soon as shark-awareness is risen and word gets out Australia is (or was) one of the "badies". Do what's right, please protect our sharks! Yours sincerely, Janine.

Por favor difundan mas acerca de los tiburones, lo que no se ve o no se conoce es como si no existiera. se debe terminar con la matanza. exigir a los paises o naciones unidas para crear leyes proteccionistas.

Hi I'm Costa Rican and I think what you guys are doing is just great!!! Not everybody likes sharks as I do, I can't find the words to say how much I love them, but I've been feeling pretty bad lately, because in those difficult times we've been past through related to the environmental troubles, people don't wanted to get involved with the cause, but, when I see what you are doing for the conservation of this very important species I decided to support you now at the distance but when I finish the university I would like to give my physical help because I realize that this is what I wanted to do and this is what I have to do. Sharks need us!!! Remember: you can make the difference...

Instead of allowing the killing of sharks, I think we should teach children early in Kindergarten and school that sharks are very important for our own life in future.

Most of the people I know in England do envy Australia for it's natural beauty and forward-thinking approach to the environment. I am genuinely shocked to hear of this shark fishery proposal. Please don't make the same bad decisions that so many other countries do and continue setting a GOOD example in a world full of bad ones.

I am outraged that with what is known about the shark population the country of Australia would allow such a fishery. This tarnishes the reputation of your nation and endangers the sharks of the world.

What happens to these magnificent creatures is a disgusting disgrace. It just shows how cold and cruel some of the human race can be. These majestic kings of the sea have caused no reason for senseless hunting and slaughter of their species and the people responsible should have their arms and legs severed and be left for dead. It makes you sick to think how thoughtless we can really be. It's our environment too and this senseless maiming of these beautiful animals is not only cruel but it puts our environment in jeopardy too! THINK ABOUT IT!

Please please please save the sharks. They are beautiful creatures and I cried while seeing the movie: Sharkwater. They are my FAVORITE animals and I didn't know this was happening. I thought they just wanted whales. Please help them, they don't deserve this. The worst thing is the way people do this, I SAW IT!!! THEY WERE JUST CUTTING AND THROWING AWAY!!! IT WAS HORRIBLE!!! I'm just 13 years old and I really love them. Please Rob Stewart, I feel identified with you. Do everything you can, cause the world is with you.

Having greatly enjoyed the experience of working on the Great Barrier Reef, I was lucky enough to see sharks almost every day. I met so many people who had never before seen a shark but who left the area with nothing but respect both for these wonderful creatures and for a country that works to try to protect the wonderful reef resource that you have. Please, please act now to help to preserve what is left.
