Palau is on our list to go in a couple of years and we are looking forward to it, though I would definitely reconsider whether to go or not if a measure like this one is adopted. The opportunity to see sharks in a protected area would be invaluable, but I fear this bill would take away this chance. Please do not adopt this bill and continue to protect sharks.

As a member of the earth science research community who works daily with global issues of sustainability and as an avid diver having visited many parts of the world, I can say this is a very disturbing development. This bill represents a critical fork in the road for Palau: either hang-tough and continue to serve as an international role model for sustainable development or be the latest to cave-in to pressure from big business. In the past, Palau has been applauded for its vision in protecting its natural resources. Palau has played a prominent leadership role on the international stage as a role-model in balancing the economic needs of its people with responsible and ethical stewardship of the environment. To a large extent, this commitment of the Palauan people to sustainability is a strong incentive to myself and other divers in selecting Palau as a preferred travel destination. I have yet to encounter another nation blessed with both Palau's pristine marine resources and the foresight and character to protect them. The proposed senate bill 8-44 represents an unfortunate about-face in Palauan policy. It seems to represent yet another victory of big business over traditional local values. This same drama has played out numerous times in other parts of the world, always with the same sad results: precious natural resources are irreparably damaged, local people get poorer, and offshore businesses get richer. objective (independent) analysis of the facts show the true costs of relaxing protections outweigh the benefits. Palau has a clear choice: either take the smart and ethical path and continue to protect your priceless natural resources (which will only grow in value over time as other parts of the world continue to decline) or squander everything on a quick buck (for a few people and offshore businesses). Don't make the same mistakes the rest of us have. Hang tough, Palau.
