Until fairly recently I was not nearly as educated as I should have been on the plight of sharks. I am educated about it now and want to voice my opinion on how important I think that they are to our oceans and ecosystems. I am horrified at how they are misunderstood, tortured and killed not to mention the disturbing practice of finning for shark fin soup (a deplorable, unsustainable and selfish practice). This has got to stop NOW before we do irrevocable damage to the shark population and oceans.

Hi, i always love the ocean and the sea animals, I hope People will realize the true treasure or our nature sea world, not ripping it off just for profits, our eco system are in threatened condition and the sad part is we knows that very clearly and nobody cares, i really hope people should have more education on wild life preserve and how important that is in our environment, once its lost its lost forever.

To the Raja Ampat Government
The decimation of sharks, mobulas, and rays around the world has created a species and ecological problem the size of which we have not really began to feel impact. By allowing the indiscriminate catch of sharks and rays by fishermen we have begun to change the balance of our oceans. Sharks are the apex predators that keep that balance healthy and in check. Without our initiative to stop this killing of sharks we are aiding in the de population of all other species of fish, including all those that provide the people of Indonesia with food and commercial income from fisheries.
As a diver I have had the privilege to visit the Raja Ampat region in more than one occasion and have been able to see the results of the efforts of NGO's such as Conservation International; but this is not enough. The complete backing of the Government is badly needed to make sure the educational efforts as well as all the private patrols to stop poaching are seen as important by the Indonesian people. We as humans need to see good and ethical examples from our governments to continue doing the right thing.
On a pure financial point of view, any government should be able to discern the great monetary/touristic value that each one of these creatures has. More and more underwater photographers and videographers are traveling to Raja Ampat to be able to document its incredible diversity with their imagery, but they are also the first group of people that will decide to put their money into other regions where both government and private citizens protect their sharks and rays.
Please set an example to the world by making Raja Ampat a no kill/harvest zone for the world's sharks, rays, and mobulas.

It's not only the finning that's killing sharks, but overfishing and abuse of the oceans in general, think before you eat sushi, have a salmon sandwich or a shrimp cocktail! The Raja Ampat should become a complete no take zone as that will help rebuild the shark population, but also the prey that the sharks feed on to thrive there.

Sharks are living beings and as such have a right to a life undisturbed by our selfish desires. If you care about animals at all, then all animals will be safe from you. You will not eat them, wear them, kill them, artificially impregnate them, enslave them, or rob them of vital resources and leave them to die a horrible death.
Please find compassion in your heart for all living beings, both animal and human. Thank you.
