We received this note from Erin Kristoff. Erin loves sharks, and also wants to go sky diving for the first time. What do the two have to do with one another? She could use some emotional support to make the jump, and would like to use this event to demonstrate how strongly she feels about sharks. And so, she has set up a donation page with all proceeds going to Shark Savers. Thanks, Erin, and we hope this is a fun (and safe) jump. Here's Erin's message:
On September 20, I am going a little bit crazy and going skydiving to save the sharks. A bunch of my friends and I had the idea to go skydiving and a few of us decided to skydive for our favorite cause (So I can’t chicken out at the last minute!). If you’re reading this blog, then you know what cause that is and why it is so important to me.
This is not solely about the money, although I want to do everything I can to help Shark Savers with their work, this is also about awareness. I have spent years trying to convince people simply not to be afraid of sharks, let alone to help them…and time is not on our side.
According to Shark Foundation Hai-Stiftung, each year, more than 600,000 to 700,000 tons of sharks are caught and slaughtered. This is the equivalent to more than 100 million sharks killed per year. In other words, 3 sharks die every second.
Remember this, there is no grand-scale "Save the Whales" campaign for sharks. There are just a few of us willing to take a stand for an animal that will probably go down in history as the most misunderstood animal of all time. And we need your help. Your donation can help Shark Savers raise awareness of the shark slaughter and stop the practice of shark finning.
I'm going to face my fears and jump out of an airplane. Can you face facts and help stop the slaughter?
Thank you,
Erin Kristoff
