I was in the Maldives in December 2008 and was pleased to hear of the election and applaud the new president in his actions to ban shark finning. It is a beautiful country with amazing marine life. Protect it!

By regulating and controlling the fisheries we will preserve the bio diversity for the future. You will also benefit because a dead shark only gives a meager return once. A live shark keeps on giving because of the number of divers and tourists that it attracts.

The Maldives have always stood for what is right. They have always been a beacon for ecological conservationism and, in return, have earned the world's respect and tourism dollars. Shame on those taking bribes so as to push such an egregious and ghastly bill that would permit shark finning, gill netting and long lining. It is not the people of the Maldives nation that want this, it is the politicians who are doing this. And all for a bribe. What will your god think of this when you meet your makers?

We strongly support a complete shark fishing ban. It is so commendable and should serve as a guide for all nations. Our concern goes to how you will successfully enforce this law and hope that you will remain resolved to do so.
