The following is a summary of the Petition to create a Shark Sanctuary in Raja Ampat, in Chinese and English. Additional resources in English are available:

To the Raja Ampat Government:

We urge you to prohibit fishing of all sharks, mantas and mobula rays.

Sharks, mantas, and rays are critical to your goals of sustainable fisheries, healthy reef environments, and strong eco-tourism.

Loss of your sharks will likely diminish biodiversity and negatively impact tourism as divers turn elsewhere. Sharks, mantas, and mobulas are among your greatest treasures! Here's why:

  • Worldwide, sharks are disappearing due to the demand for their fins.
  • Raja Ampat's sharks have been plundered - mainly by outsiders.
  • Sharks, as apex predators, are necessary to keep fish stock and corals healthy.
  • Sharks and mantas reproduce very slowing cannot recover from heavy fishing. If they are not protected now, they can disappear forever.
  • Healthy shark and manta populations will result in increased tourism revenue for the people of Raja Ampat.

  • Raja Ampat

You may sign this petition within the same form as the "Pledge to not eat shark fin soup". Or, to sign the petition separately, you may do so, here.

i'm lucky that i already could visit Raja Ampat twice, the most beautiful place on earth above and specially under water. Please keep it like that by saving the sharks, so our children can see the amazing underwater world too!!!!
