Catherine Teng is a Singaporean who has stopped having sharks and shark fin soup after picking up diving in 2004. Since then, she stopped eating stingray, tuna, swordfish, marlin, squid, cuttlefish, octopus – the list might seem strange to some but those seafoods are common in Asia. A couple of years ago, she started her personal campaign to save sharks by talking to her friends and colleagues about the plight of sharks and started to refuse invitations to attend wedding banquets and celebration that serve shark fin. She had successfully convinced her department to remove shark fin from the annual staff lunch and her brother and 2 of her colleagues to remove shark fin from their wedding banquets.
In April 2011, she co-organized and managed the Shark Savers booth at the Asia Dive Expo (ADEX) in Singapore, the team of volunteers managed to secure 2400 pledges not to eat shark fin during the 3-day event and so, she became 1 of the Shark Savers.
Her full-time job is an office administrator. She is happily married to a wonderful man who supports her conservation effort 100% and is her best dive buddy and they have 2 cats.
