i am hoping to take a trip to dive and explore the wonderful oppurtunities that exist with sharks in Raja ampat. however i will not proceed with my trip if the conservation of these animals, sharks and rays, is not protected. They deserve a sanctuary where they can live and be free and not be hunted.

We must protect, not slaughter, these creatures. They are part of a well developed ecological system. Let us cease to be destroyers and instead develop and cultivate our sense of awe of nature and her creations and become good stewards.

I have written about shark fin and the need to preserve these essential animals in my publication, as Hong Kong is one center of the trade. I am also a scuba diver and travel to places where i can dive and see ALL marine life, including sharks and rays.

As humans we have the the power and influence to save sharks of all species. I would feel more shame to tell my children that sharks are extinct and we as humans are solely to blame for it. I do not want that on my conscious. Please make the right decision to save the sharks not only for our generation but for future generations ahead.

I can't fathom the number quoted above. 73 million sharks killed a year!! Just say it a few times to understand what that means!!!! 73 MILLION SHARKS KILLED A YEAR!! It is outrageous! This concept that they are to be feard is nonsense. WE are to be feared not the sharks. There are over 370 spiecies of sharks and only 3 or 4 are implicated in attacks on humans. But more people die from the common cold per year, 1 000 000 world wide to be exact (*from nationmaster) than shark attacks. Sharks grace our waters and serve their purpose in the balance of nature. Allow all of humanity to enjoy this.

5076. Marcine Thompson, Red Lion, United States
It is a horrible sight to see sharks being killed for the fin's and other body parts!! I love sharks and so should everyone else. They play a huge part in our world's eco-system and ther is no reason these beautiful creaturs should suffer due to our selfish needs!!! Thank you for sending me this petition i signed it with no hesitation!!! I hope this petition helps and please keep me posted on this subject.

If humans are going to continue to survive on this beautiful planet we need to begin to recognize that we are part of a larger picture where biodiversity is our means of survival. Every species is part of that and not 'ours for the taking'. Protecting biodiversity is a first great step, but there also has to be something done to make eating something like shark fin soup socially unacceptable. There also has to be something done for the fishermen who are only answering the call of a demand of a product in this heartless economic system that we have created. I understand that they have not made a good choice and it's easy to only be angry with them, but they too are only trying to make money to feed their own families. Perhaps a program could be set up that would help the fishermen enter into a new form of business. Maybe even in tourism showing visitors what the country is doing to protect biodiversity, including sharks, and take them on tours. They could even share their own stories. Wouldn't it be wonderful if they and their children were part of the movement to help re-build the shark population? I am hopeful that this can and will happen. Thank you.

The destruction of the shark is removing an important preditor from the seas and totally wrecking total ecosystems which will eventually cause the seas to die!

Mr
While i totally agree that that this is wrong our energies would be better spent on tackling the human population explosion. More people inevitably mean more exploitation and destruction. No one seems to question our 'divine right' to go forth and multiply. That is the issue which needs tackling for all our sakes

It seems there is no hope for Indonesia but good luck. As long as the govrenment insists that commercial fishing can co-exist in recreational and important marine areas, this will continue.
