The "State of the Sharks" exhibit, featuring the work of marine photographers Chris Huss and Mark Strickland is now open, and will run through March 3rd. Shark Savers’ Sue Chen, Kevin Sullivan, and Liz Sullivan were on hand at the G2 Gallery in Venice, California for the recent and very successful opening night.
“State of the Sharks” seeks to inspire visitors to become engaged in shark conservation by seeing their beauty through the eyes of these two supremely talented photographers, and drawing their attention to the threats facing sharks using informational graphics and interactive displays. All proceeds which the gallery receives as part of this exhibit will be generously donated to Shark Savers!
The reception event at the gallery on Saturday night was very well attended, and was one of the most successful in the gallery’s history. The G2 Gallery was founded with the purpose of bringing awareness to environmental issues through the use of photographic art.
Chris Huss has been photographing nature for more than 30 years, and has had his work published in The New York Times, National Geographic, Vogue, and Time, and his images have been used by ABC, the World Wildlife Fund, Greenpeace, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association, Alaska Airlines, Hallmark, and Nikon. He received a degree in photography and filmmaking from the University of Washington in 1981 and currently lives in Seattle.
Mark Strickland has enjoyed a long career associated with diving including working as a boat captain and dive instructor, as well as cruise director and photo pro on live aboard dive boats. His work has been published by BBC Wildlife, Conde Nast Traveler, Geo, National Geographic World, Nature's Best, Natural History, and Outside. He has discovered several species of nudibranchs, including one named after him, Halgerda stricklandi.
Both Chris’ and Mark’s images currently on display at the gallery show many different facets of sharks in the wild, as well as the dark side of the shark finning trade. From exquisite blue water photos of oceanic whitetips to the horror of a drowning finned shark, it brings the shark conservation full circle for exhibit attendees.
