As part of the Ban the Fin campaign, you can sign up a group or individuals within your community to pledge themselves to shark protection by becoming a Ban the Fin member.
Ban the Fin members and groups pledge that they will not participate in or condone the sale, purchase, or possession of shark products. Each organization will receive a certificate from Shark Savers and be listed in our Ban the Fin map.
Here are suggested steps to sign up Ban the Fin member groups:
- Identify the groups among schools, universities, companies, home-owners associations, churches, sports teams, or any other community group to sign on to Ban the Fin. Sign up your dormitory, your tennis club, your trade association.
- Download and customize a Ban the Fin action letter to introduce yourself and the cause to the leaders of the group or groups. You can download a suggested letter template in Microsoft Word here. Replace the text in [square brackets] with your information.
- Customize the the letter as you see fit and include what you are asking for. For example, you could ask for a meeting or to give a presentation to the group. If it is a letter to a school, you could ask to create a Shark Savers/Ban the Fin club.
- Ask friends, family, classmates or colleagues to also send a support letter to the leaders of the group you wrote to, if appropriate.
- Follow up your letter with a phone call to arrange for what you asked for: a meeting, or a presentation. At the meeting or presentation, the purpose is to educate the people about the importance of sharks and their plight. The goal will be to have them sign on as Ban the Fin members and for the organization to become a member group. See Set up or give a Shark Savers presentation for some helpful suggestions.

to let us know to whom you've sent the letter. This will also allow us to connect you with other people in your community who are engaged in the Ban the Fin campaign.
- Education and Outreach: Each group or organization will be different, with some requiring some effort to sign up to Ban the Fin, while some may be relatively easy. The process will likely involve education before they will be ready to sign up. For more information, see Education and Outreach.
- Sign up the group's individuals. Enable them to join Shark Savers mailing list, to sign your petition, and to be a Ban the Fin member. This is a very important step so that we can keep each individual informed and also involve them in international and national actions in the future. The best way for someone to sign up for membership or to be on the mailing list is online, here. However, when it is more practical to sign up via paper form, it is vital that you send these to Shark Savers, or scan and email them to us.
- Sign the organization up as a Ban the Fin member group. Shark Savers will provide an official commitment letter for the organization's leader to sign. Shark Savers will then follow-up by sending a certificate to the organization's leader identifying them as a Ban the Fin member group. The organization will be added to the Ban the Fin map.
