Help stop shark fin soup
Demand for shark fin soup is the primary driver of shark over-fishing. You can help stop it!

Don't eat shark fin soup

Obviously, the place to start is to just not have any shark fin soup. Don't order shark products of any kind if it's on the menu in a restaurant. If you are at a wedding or business banquet that is serving shark fin soup, politely decline. Don't patronize restaurants that serve shark or shark fin soup. And, explain why you are doing so.

Don't serve shark fin soup at your wedding

If it is common in your culture to serve shark fin soup at your wedding, you can make a bold and positive statement by not serving the soup. We can design cards to include with your invitation and to provide at the banquet tables stating that you will not be serving shark fin soup.

Encourage restaurants to not serve shark fin soup

Want to take it a step further? If you would like to try to convince restaurant owners to not serve the soup, we recommend that you do so respectfully. Restaurants are within their legal right to serve the soup and may feel that they are meeting the desires of their customers. They likely do not know that shark fin soup has hazardous mercury, or that sharks are in serious trouble because of soup consumption. You can help educate them.

  • Read the articles on Shark Savers and elsewhere about shark fin soup and mercury so that you can make the argument. Visit our mini-site on shark fin soup.
  • Look for restaurants in your area that serve shark fin soup. You can also look here for currently known restaurants: Animal Welfare institute. When you find new restaurants, fill in the form below and add them to the list (we'll shark them with the Animal Welfare Institute)
  • Go to our Downloads page for our brochures on shark fin soup and print them out:
  • Visit the restaurant and ask to speak with the owner or manager to discuss the issue. Do your best. You may not succeed the first time out, but you will have begun a process of education.
  • See if you can enlist friends to a join you on these efforts. Visit a recalcitrant restaurant again in a month or two for another try.

Organize a shark fin soup campaign in your community

We will utilize our mailing list to see if there are others in your area who would like to work with you. We can develop materials, such as advertising, and other support. We have developed additional guidelines for this campaign, which we will provide to you. If you are interested in pursuing this, please This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Make presentations to Asian community groups and clubs

Ask for 10 or 15 minutes at a regular meeting of church and temple groups and cultural organizations within the Asian community, and college clubs for Asian and Asian-American students. Give a very short presentation on the hazards of shark fin soup, answer questions, and leave handouts. We can prepare this presentation for or with you.

Add your ideas and experiences, below, to make this program more effective.

Hi, I am living in Sydney, Australia in the Western Suburbs and would like to start getting out and about to educate people about shark fin and shark fin soup which is sold in the city in many Asian restaurants. I am happy to go to Asian clubs, etc and do presentations and wonder if anyone in Sydney would like to help out, start petitions, etc? Any help would be grately appreciated!

List of companies who use shark fin in their products
I would like to see on your site a list of companies who produce products which contain shark fin so that i can boycott them. Even though I would not buy their shark -fin products, as a consumer i may inadvertently buy another product thereby supporting the company when i would prefer not to. Thanks.

Brochure will be available this week
As part of the campaign we developed with WildAid for China, we created a web site and a series of downloadable, printable materials. A brochure is included. All of this is available in Chinese and English. In China, the web site will be on WildAid's site. We will integrate that site into Shark Savers site for North America and the rest of the world. The campaign will launch on December 19th. We'll issue an announcement.

Needed: Traditional Chinese version of brochure on shark fin soup.
I live in an Chinese/Asian area in Los Angeles. I would like to spread the word. However, a brochure needs to be created that is in English and Traditional Chinese for this area.

It needs both languages allowing one brochure to meet both needs in the community.

Maybe someone who reads this can help?

Shark fin movement - Vancouver
Lydia,

I was excited to see your post. I, too, am a Vancouver resident and appalled by shark finning. I have been thinking that the Olympics would make an excellent global forum to discourage the use of shark fin and shark related products, especially since it coincides with the Chinese New Year (and if I'm not mistaken, this is a time when a larger amount of shark fin is consumed due to the celebrations). I really don't know what I'm doing yet, I've been writing several emails and doing a bit of research, but if you'd be at all interested in collaberating, please respond.

My idea to stop shark fin soup consumption in my community
I am starting a Facebook cause page and your organization is going to be my beneficiary.

I live in Vancouver, BC, Canada – one of the places with the most Chinese immigrants, which also means a huge amount of Chinese restaurants that serve shark fin.

I am starting a cause (profits to go to you) to get people to pledge 2 simple things:
1) not to consume shark products anywhere (at home, restaurants) and of any kind (fin, meat, pill form)
2) not to dine at restaurants with shark on the menu (boycott).

I am hoping with these 2 simple pledges people will start to make a difference. I am sure it will as Vancouver has so many Chinese/Asians. If we all play our part, then change will occur. I am hoping that I will be able to use the materials offered on Shark Safe Network to contact restaurants and get them to take shark off the menu. Today’s my first day so I have a long way to go, but I believe I can do it.

I am also planning to hold parties where people can become educated through video and discussion. I plan to collect pledges from people (and of course I myself will make pledges) such as purposely not serving shark fin on special occasions and making the restaurant aware of this decision (that it’s on purpose) and to notify guests too. Or, for myself, I am planning that the next 6 mths I do not buy anything for myself (clothes, CDs, DVDs, magazines, etc) but instead use the money that I could’ve spent on myself to print flyers/posters, throw parties (as aforementioned) or donate it all. Also, for X’mas this year, I don’t think I will be buying presents so much as advertising to people by buying shark aware products (eg: films, tshirts, necklaces, donations in the name of someone else etc) and just overall trying to raise awareness.

This will all come as I put everything together, but I am confident that just by having people pledge to the 2 simple things, an impact will be made. I know myself I just started yesterday and today I will have already made a (tiny) impact. My mom wanted to go to a certain restaurant that serves shark fin tonight. I told her I cannot go b/c they serve shark fin and if we had to eat there that I would not eat and that I would have to speak to the manager of the restaurant. We changed to a different place and now that restaurant will not have earned our business. If just one individual takes up these 2 pledges, many will be affected.

As mentioned above, you have materials for such campaigns? Can you please send me guideline information for my shark fin soup campaign? Anything and everything will help me get started!

Thanks for all you’re doing to make others aware.
My life has been changed, and I hope to do the same.

With utmost gratitude and respect,
Lydia Chung
