Sharks are worth more to tourism alive than dead. Once they are gone, they are gone forever. If you protect them, and as a consequence, the entire ecosystem, you can make much, much more money on these sharks over and over again if they are alive and keeping the islands balanced. Please, please reconsider shark fishing. They are disappearing at an alarming rate over the world. Please help save them! Thank you.

As a frequent diver in the waters of Palau, I've already seen the decline in the resident gray reef shark population, and have seen with my own eyes the "bycatch" (shark fin) drying in the sun on top of these Taiwan owned fishing vessels. To allow them further permission to exploit/deplete the top end of the food chain is nothing short of criminal. Eco tourists the world over flock to Palau's pristine natural environment, and I myself have spent thousands of dollars over the years strictly on the premise that the Palauan government remains environmentally proactive towards shark conservation. The short term gain can only very temporarily cover the rape of the local pelagic population that will occur should this come into law. One can only imagine the fallout from negative publicity, and divers will turn away in droves once they discover the "8th wonder of the world" is actually more interested in giving a flip-flop wearing taxi driver in Shenzhen a "special soup experience" than it is preserving one of the last places on earth where the ocean's top end predators still exist in numbers. If this passes, you'll have at least one less diving tourist. The idea of seeing Palau's magnificent dropoffs without the majesty of the ever-present gray reef sharks would be to horrifying to contemplate. No Palaun I've ever met would possibly be in support of Bill 8-44. It's ecological suicide...Do not do this! Michael Botti

Shark fishing is a short term solution. Maintaining our planet should far outweigh short term economic gains. Palau can sustain ecotourism longer than shark fishing. Shark fishing for short-term gain just destroys the long-term gain for Palau. My son and I took a dive trip to Palau a few years ago, and the chance to see a lot of sharks was the MAIN reason that we chose Palau. If you destroy the shark population, you will lose most of your dive tourism dollars. PLEASE PROTECT YOUR WATERS AND MARINE LIFE!!
