If shark-finning is permitted to any degree, Palau will no longer in any way, shape or form, be able to legitimately attach the term "eco" to itself or any of its activities. As a person who is part Palauan, this would sadden me. I will be coming to vacation and dive in two weeks. Over the past three decades, my family and I have vacationed/visited Palau many times. If any shark finning or commercial fishing of sharks is ever permitted legally, that will be the last of my family
3650. Irene Schlotter, Barcelona, Barcelona, Spain
Dear President Johnson Toribiong, dear Senator Adalbert Eledui: Please refrain from legalizing the shark hunt. Many shark species are greatly endangered and even though most humans seem to think that they are just a dangerous nuisance, they do have a biological function (as opposed to pet dogs, BTW), they have survived and evolved in the course of millions of years - only to get killed NOW? And top of it their extinction will have been legalized by a government that actually DOES have the power to put an end to this. Please abolish this idea even though this might mean that shark fin soup will no longer be served in other countries. Sometimes traditions must yield the modern times with their new parameters. Please do some soul-searching and reconsider: Palau should not opt for short term gains but rather for a real long-term future - in ecotourism. With sharks. Who would not be just amazed and thrilled at the sight of those imposing, elegant and ancient animals? Best regards, I. Schlotter

This seems like numerous steps backward in many aspects for Palau. As this is entirely obvious, I am sure the senate will see the errors of its ways and reconsider.

My husband and I love diving in your country. The sharks make it worth traveling to the opposite side of the world to dive there. Shark finning is cruel and not sustainable. Please reject this bill and maintain your wonderful natural underwater environment for all to enjoy.

It is in time now. Do not kill. Wake up. Palau has been enriched by the shark. Because the diver comes to see the shark. Palau where the shark doesn't exist doesn't go for everyone to dive.

I have been an active diver for 30 years and have observed tremendous decline in world shark populations. I have observed stacks of shark carcasses missing only their dorsal fins stacked up on beaches on islands in the Pacific. I implore all organizations that can make a difference to stop exploitation of policies that allow decimation and extinction of entire species necessary to the survival of our planet.

Do not let short term needs dictate your long term policies. Your natural resources are what make you stand apart from the crowd. Don

How can anyone not think that what they are doing to these sharks is not wrong? If this was happening to cats or dogs everyone would go nuts over it.
